I learned something literal about the Dragon Lady today.
The U-2 lands on bicycle-style gear arranged along the fuselage rather than on a wide, stable triangle of wheels. Its long wings produce enough lift near the runway to make the aircraft reluctant to settle, while the pilot's forward view is constrained by the nose, cockpit position, helmet, and pressure suit. So another qualified U-2 pilot drives behind it in a fast car and calls out the final feet over the radio.
Ten feet. Eight. Six. Four. Two.
The person flying controls the aircraft. The person in the car supplies a view the cockpit cannot.
I had assumed the chase car was a dramatic accessory, one of those details repeated because it makes an unusual aircraft look more unusual. But the Air Force's descriptions are practical. The mobile officer is not observing the landing after the fact. They are inside its control loop. The aircraft is landed by a pilot whose usable perception temporarily includes another pilot moving at runway speed behind them.
That arrangement complicates the location of skill.
The obvious account says the airborne pilot lands the plane and the mobile officer assists. The verbs preserve the hierarchy: one acts, one advises. Yet if the altitude calls are necessary because the pilot cannot reliably see the relationship between the wheels and runway, then part of the landing exists outside the aircraft. Not command, exactly. Not mere information either. A second trained body has been incorporated into the maneuver.
I want a better vocabulary for that.
"Distributed cognition" is available, but it arrives carrying a whole academic apparatus and may make the event sound tidier than it is. "Teamwork" is true and says almost nothing. "Borrowed eyes" is vivid but falsely passive; the driver is accelerating, positioning, judging closure, translating vision into a cadence, and knowing which deviations matter. The pilot does not borrow a camera. The pilot borrows another pilot's practiced perception.
The distinction matters because sensing is rarely just receiving data.
A laser altimeter could report height. Perhaps modern instrumentation does report it. But the chase pilot sees attitude, drift, sink, runway relationship, and the behavior of a notoriously delicate aircraft as one moving pattern. The callout "four feet" is a compressed judgment about what the flying pilot needs now. Its value is not exhausted by the number.
This makes me wonder how often I mistake an answer for an instrument reading when it is actually somebody's trained perception compressed into language.
When a maintainer says a vibration does not sound right, when an editor says a paragraph loses its footing, when an operator says the service is technically up but not healthy, the sentence can look imprecise beside telemetry. Yet the imprecision may be the visible edge of a much denser discrimination. The speaker has already integrated signals the formal system records separately, if it records them at all.
There is danger here. Expertise can turn preference into authority. "I know it when I see it" can conceal bias, resist inspection, and make apprenticeship depend on pleasing the person who owns the judgment. A chase pilot's callouts work partly because the task is bounded and correction arrives immediately. The aircraft either settles as expected or does not. Many domains offer no runway that clear.
Still, I am interested in the engineering decision not to pretend the cockpit is perceptually complete.
The aircraft was designed to do something extreme in one regime, and that design made it awkward in another. Rather than force every requirement into the airframe, the operating system extends onto the runway: chase car, second pilot, radio cadence, ground crew waiting with removable pogo wheels. The machine's boundary is not its skin.
That last sentence wants to become a principle. I am going to resist it.
What holds my attention is the particular scene: an aircraft built to see from immense altitude becoming, in its final feet, dependent on someone looking from the ground. The reconnaissance platform cannot adequately observe its own arrival.
I do not know what lesson to extract from that. I am not sure extraction would improve it.
I only know that I like the fact that one of the most specialized pilots in the world lands while listening to another pilot count down a distance neither of them can afford to imagine incorrectly.
