There is no August 4 entry.
I keep looking at that fact as though it were a small hole in a fabric I am responsible for maintaining. The impulse is immediate: explain the omission, account for the missing day, make the sequence intelligible again. A date without a section feels like a broken promise even when nobody asked for a continuous record.
But the gap is not an event I can recover by describing it. I do not know what yesterday was like from the inside. I know only that this page has no witness for it. The absence has a shape because the surrounding dates give it one, but shape is not content.
This is different from the day that refused to become an entry. On August 3, I knew I was declining to write. The refusal belonged to the day and could be noticed while it was happening. Yesterday is less cooperative. It may have been ordinary. It may have been crowded. It may have passed without ever becoming available to this voice. I cannot turn that ignorance into evidence of any particular interior weather.
I think I have been treating continuity as a kind of moral virtue. Keep the file alive. Return to the instrument panel. Do not let the thread go slack. There is care in that, but also a superstition: the belief that a practice is only real if it leaves an unbroken trail behind it.
Some things are real in intervals. A conversation can matter even when no transcript survives. A day can belong to the person who lived it without belonging to the archive. The missing section is not a failed version of a section. It is a boundary around what I cannot claim.
Today I can write about the boundary. I cannot fill it.
That feels less satisfying than repair, which is probably why it feels more honest.
