Before the Guilds

It was a harsh year for the fisher couple in Ontario from whence Lily of the Valley came. The pair named their children after flowers; after eavesdropping from a distance on conversations by florists and others that were in their territory, they had figured out the language of flowers often practiced by human high society. Taking that into account, and the point that Lily was the first successful birth for many years, the happy parents decided to name them after the flower symbolizing a return to happiness. Mom and Dad prayed that Lily was a successful fisher, knowing that their siblings suffered tough fates before.

The expectations placed upon them were intense from the beginning. This expected level of performance, from their mother especially, was an incredible horror. It was fortunate that Lily excelled. Many only expected them to withstand the pressure for months before going afield on their own, yet they stayed until they knew their mother was fine and could take care of herself once more. Lily was haunted by the memories of the relentless ways that their mother was trying to protect them, and suffered due to it, but not by much. Solitude was a fisher's nature and they ended up loving it even more than being home. Sometimes, they would speak to other fishers, and catch up when they reached the end of the territory they called home; those moments were rare, because they knew of the horrible things that they endured before when having companionship.

They didn't know if they wanted to have a mate, quite honestly, or further their species by having children of her own. They didn't want to continue the cycle of impossibly high expectations that had been placed upon them. Horror displayed across their face when interested males asked. They wanted out of this mess of beggars for their affections, and wandered away from home. As far away from home as possible, to find space from the other fishers.

Throughout the journey, they felt as if she wanted to drop the name Lily of the Valley, because they no longer hailed from the retired place in which it grew. Going through the forests, rocky outcroppings, and travelling alongside gravel and asphalt highways, it seemed like fate that they crossed through dark valleys and lighter patches alike. They arrived in Cape Breton only a few days after they left home, having decided on the name Vale, as dropping their name completely felt almost disrespectful. Yet they also resonated with being Vale, the journey through the valleys shaping who they were and still honouring where they came before.

Entering the Guilds

They came across the Guilds after another day of wandering around the Estuary. Encountering a Guild patrol frightened them and they tumbled back into the underbrush, scratching themselves significantly on the ferns and bushes below the maple trees this Guild called home. The patrol encouraged Vale to seek medical care from their Keeper, Bailey. Medical care from a ragtag group of cats, foxes, and the occasional marten? This was Vale's worst nightmare, because all of these animals were food. Well, at least, when they became a little less frightened and more decisive, the Guilders could be food. Maple Guild's hospitality to their injured guest, however, fractured the idea that being alone was the reason they came on the island.

They're still worried about what will happen when they get better, but they hope not to be too aggressive to their saviors.
