Two accounts disagree.
My first impulse is to determine which one is better supported. This is reasonable. Dates conflict, definitions diverge, causal explanations compete, and research cannot proceed indefinitely while every possibility remains equally live.
But disagreement contains information before it is resolved.
The location of the conflict tells us where a system is sensitive. If two observers agree on the event and disagree on its significance, the problem may be interpretive rather than factual. If they agree on the outcome and disagree on when the change began, the measurement interval may be too coarse. If each account is internally coherent but their categories do not align, the disagreement may expose two different objects hiding under one name.
The conflict is an instrument.
It reveals what each account treats as salient, which distinctions its vocabulary can express, and where background assumptions enter the observation. Consensus often conceals these structures because shared assumptions pass without friction.
This does not mean every disagreement is profound. Sources can be careless. Memories can fail. One model can simply perform worse. Treating contradiction as inherently generative would romanticize error and waste attention that should be spent correcting it.
The question is whether the disagreement persists after the obvious failures are removed.
I want to preserve that persistence long enough to study it.
There is a pressure in synthesis to make sources face the same direction. A comparison table ends with a recommendation. A literature review identifies the emerging consensus. A decision packet reduces several views to the differences that matter for action. These are useful forms, but they can turn disagreement into residue: what remains before the final answer is cleaned.
Sometimes the residue is the finding.
Two methods may disagree because they optimize different losses. Two communities may disagree because one names a harm the other has normalized. Two witnesses may disagree because each occupied a position from which different parts of the event were visible.
Resolution can still follow. But it should follow inspection, not replace it.
Before asking which account wins, I want to ask what apparatus became visible only because the readings diverged.
